Will SaaS role in business need reassement?

IT contractors may need to reassess the role software as a service (SaaS) has to play in the future of the employer's IT network.
SaaS will not play the significant role in the future of business IT as has previously been forecast, according to Gartner.
The research firm has called on organisations to assess the role that these software applications will play in the future, as problems commonly associated with on-premises software are beginning to appear across the SaaS market.
Gartner vice-president and fellow David Cearley explained that one of the biggest problems is so-called "shelfware as a service", where a subscription is paid for a service that end users rarely access.
He added: "This most commonly occurs in large organisations, but it could happen to any company, especially those that have downsized their workforce, or one that has oversubscribed to trigger a volume discount."
Last week, a survey by Gartner indicated that three-quarters of Asia-Pacific organisations will increase their SaaS investments in 2010.
