Use of SaaS and cloud computing 'will be mandated'

IT contractors should familiarise themselves with Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and cloud computing.
According to the managing director of the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) Europe, Doug Miles, these systems could soon be thrust upon businesses whether they are ready or not - meaning experts could be required to smooth the transition.
Technology is going to move forward in such a way that use of these services will be subject to a corporate or even a government mandate, Mr Miles claims.
"You will use either an open source system or you will use more SaaS or possibly even you will use the cloud, so it's worth taking a view of what that involves," he explained.
SaaS has a distinct advantage over cloud computing, Mr Miles concludes, which is the ability to speak directly to the person who sold you the product and work out any problems directly.
According to the results of a recent survey by Iron Mountain, 65 per cent of SaaS subscribers plan to add between one and five SaaS applications over the next 12 to 18 months.
