Unified communications systems 'are too complex for most firms'

IT contractors will find large organisations are not keen on implementing unified communications due to the complexity of the process, it has been claimed.
Many companies are still operating a number of older legacy computer systems alongside their newer programs, which makes converging them all a difficult proposition, according to the Enterprise Virtual Private Network Users Association (EVUA).
Making a business case for unified communications can also be difficult as although there are a lot of benefits to implementing such a system, the soft ones are harder to see, claims Jon Neville, general manager at EVUA.
"We've found adoption of unified communications among our members, the larger companies, is actually quite slow," he concluded.
According to the latest research from enterprise communications provider Avaya, network security, resiliency and cost management were rated most important overall for networks supporting implementation of unified communications.
The firm also found that growing bandwidth demands are driving the need for more resilient networks.
