Unemployment fall 'good news' for workers

There is good news for IT contractors in the latest unemployment figures, as a slight fall in the number of people out of work indicates that the economy is moving forward.
The Office for National Statistics has announced that the number of people without employment during May and July fell by 8,000, to an overall total of 2.47 million.
Reacting to the news, the Recruitment & Employment Confederation's (REC) chief executive Kevin Green said that the data is good news, signalling a period of stability in the jobs market.
However, the overall picture contains some difficult challenges ahead, including the full force of the Comprehensive Spending Review.
Mr Green concluded: "Looking ahead, we can expect unemployment to remain static and to potentially start creeping upwards in light of expected public sector cuts.
"Can the private sector absorb the public sector fall-out? The latest signs are not good."
The REC's latest index suggests employer confidence has taken a major hit in August.
