UK workers 'want performance-related pay'

IT contractors and other workers want the opportunity to take performance-related pay, it is claimed.
Charles Cotton, performance and reward advisor for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, said that employee morale can be improved if workers are given the chance to earn more for the quality of their work.
Recent data released by the Office for National Statistics has revealed that earnings growth decreased in the year to June 2010, from 2.7 per cent to just 1.3 per cent.
With companies therefore struggling to raise pay for all, Mr Cotton says that changing the structure to ensure greater reward for those who deserve it could be very beneficial to both companies and workers.
He added: "One of the questions we asked was, 'On what basis would you like to get rewarded?'.
"Quite a lot of individuals said they'd like it linked to either their performance, the performance of their team or the performance of their organisation."
