UK jobs market 'starting to polarise'

IT contractors looking for placements will be finding that the UK jobs market is starting to polarise.
According to the latest August Jobs Outlook from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), the public and private sectors are looking very difficult in their hiring confidence.
The public sector and its impending job cuts are dragging down confidence in the labour market, the REC claims.
Private firms are being cautious in the short term, the group claims, but a reluctance to take on permanent staff could well play into the hands of short-term IT contractors.
"It is likely that this polarising effect will continue for a while as different parts of the economy emerge from the recession at different rates," said REC director of research Roger Tweedy.
In its recent interim report, recruitment consultancy Harvey Nash declared that demand for IT contractors in the six months to July 31st has been "robust".
