UK firms 'must try harder' to attract female IT contractors

Three-quarters of UK firms are not doing enough to attract female IT contractors, it is claimed.
Research from 360 Degree IT has revealed there is still a dearth of women in IT jobs, as only 20 per cent of the sector's workforce is female.
With the IT sector becoming increasingly crowded and commoditised, companies need to harness as much creativity and innovation as they can, according to Maggie Berry, managing director of Women in Technology.
"What better way to do this than by bringing more women into the mix who can provide fresh ideas, approaches and insights previously unavailable to the organisation," she added.
To achieve this, organisations need to focus on marketing themselves more to women, encouraging flexible working programmes used by IT contractors.
The government has recently been encouraged to use more IT contractors, in order to use resources more wisely and negating the need to simply cut jobs altogether.
