UK broadband speeds 'can vary by 33% throughout the day'
IT contractors working from home will be interested to hear that Broadband speeds can vary by up to a third throughout the day.

According to the latest research from Top10.com, the fastest time for web browsing is 02:00 BST, when the average speed is 7Mb, while the worst time to be surfing is at around 20:00 BST, when speed drops to an average of 4.73Mb.

The comparison site came to these figures by conducting over 250,000 speed tests on its website over a 90-day period, for customers of all major broadband providers.

A big factor in the speed of service is the internet service provider's approach to "throttling", the practice of controlling users' service speed to stop heavy users taking all the available bandwidth, claims Top10.com's Alex Buttle.

Broadband.co.uk recently warned IT contractors and other web users to make sure they know what their broadband limit means for their everyday usage, to avoid using too much.
