Twitter 'still experimental for advertising'
Contractors who utilise microblogging site Twitter should bear in mind that advertising on the website is still very much in the experimental stages, one expert maintains.

Andrew Girdwood, media innovations director at the digital agency, said that Twitter fits the business models of some companies better than others.

"For example, Twitter has had a profound effect on journalism, and if you're a content type of site where you monetise this stuff by getting people to notice you and notice what you're publishing on the web it's very much easier to have a success with Twitter," he said.

However, he continued, trying to sell quality products on the site is not going to be quite so easy as it is difficult to use it for anything other than brand boosting.

It was just over five years ago that the first ever tweet was sent, according to co-founder of the site Biz Stone.
