Superfast broadband 'must be extended across the UK'
IT contractors may see more job vacancies if calls to have superfast broadband extended to the whole of the UK are answered.

The publically-funded rollout of next-generation access (NGA) to areas that the private sector will not reach is essential, according to the Communications Consumer Panel (CCP).

It was widely reported last month that the prime minister wanted to ensure that everyone in the UK had access to superfast broadband.

The CCP welcomed the prime minister's comments, but said that the speed of the government's actions was important.

"It is imperative that the government begins roll-out of publicly-subsidised NGA as soon as possible to complement market-led initiatives," said spokesperson for the CCP.

The government also needs to consider what speed constitutes 'superfast', according to fibre optic infrastructure specialists i3 Group.

Media and communications regulator Ofcom classes it as anything above 24Mbps, yet this will soon be outdated with the advent of things like internet protocol television, i3 Group claims.ADNFCR-2994-ID-19705676-ADNFCR
