'Staggering fall' in the number of IT graduates

The number of IT contractors in the UK is set to fall following a sharp decline in the number of higher education IT graduates, an independent computer games developer claims.
Since 2001, the number of applicants to computer science courses has dropped by 52 per cent, according to David Braben, founder of Frontier Developments.
Mr Braben said that this was a "staggering drop" and blamed the introduction of the ICT GCSE for the loss of interest in the subject as an academic pursuit.
"Unfortunately, production of the ICT GCSE and the corresponding national curriculum was a real shame, because, to be honest, most children are very, very computer literate when they get to the GCSE age," he said.
Falling numbers of computing graduates is a problem that is only occurring in the UK and could lead to us falling behind in the sector, Mr Braaben added.
The government has recognised that the IT sector is a "key strategic area" and has opened up more university places to computing and maths undergraduates, according to e-skills UK.
