Space sector 'could present IT contractors with new opportunities'
IT contractors could see a number of new opportunities emerging in the space sector following investment into this industry.

The Space Innovation and Growth Strategy 2010-2030 has forecast additional spending in this area of £400 billion by 2030.

Richard Peckham, chairman of UKspace and business development director for Astrium Limited, has claimed that this money will be spread over a wide range of different areas.

Dividing the space sector into two categories, he suggests that upstream work involves the construction of the hardware and software necessary for infrastructure such as satellites.

Mr Peckham highlights the growing opportunities in so-called downstream development, where IT contractors could find work developing applications for this infrastructure.

He added: "The upstream has got quite a lot in common with aerospace, but roughly the downstream is somewhere between five and ten times bigger than the upstream manufacturing side."

The Space Innovation and Growth Strategy 2010 – 2030 report sets out things the UK must do to try and capture ten per cent of the space market by 2030, which is expected to create 100,000 UK jobs.ADNFCR-2994-ID-19622209-ADNFCR
