Small businesses 'struggling to make the best of technology'

IT contractors could help small businesses overcome their communications barriers, a leading IT research company has claimed.
Many small businesses, particularly those without a full-time IT manager, are unable to make the best use of communications technology due to its cost and complexity, according to a new report by Quocirca.
They are also struggling with "shadow" IT systems like Skype and instant messenger, deciphering vendor buzzwords and providing facilities for home workers, Quocirca claim.
"Small businesses rely upon effective communications tools, but often many are too complex or costly to be worthwhile," said Rob Bamforth, from the company.
Mr Bamforth added that small businesses often focus too much on price, thus falling for "false economies" such as low cost connectivity.
It was recently reported by the Federation of Small businesses that many would like to expand and invest in services such as IT, but complex current tax legislation absorbing their time and financial resources.
