Small businesses 'lack data security knowhow'

IT contractors may be required to help small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) increase their data security.
A new report from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has found that many firms still lack the technical knowhow to ensure they are fully compliant with data protection laws.
Smaller companies simply do not have the time or budget to dedicate to the issue, while in addition the lack of a simple security standard certificate is preventing then from adequately implementing correct systems.
As such, IT contractors may find SMEs in need of expert advice and temporary assistance to deal with this problem.
"Many small businesses use personal information, and we recognise that SMEs need practical and concise guidance to help them comply with the law," the ICO's report said.
The importance of data security was highlighted by the fact that the ICO was recently granted the power to fine any company deemed to be in breach of data protection regulations up to £500,000.
