Siemens IT contractors at the BBC to vote on strike action
IT contractors working at the BBC for German technology firm Siemens are considering strike action over pay freezes and redundancies, media union BECTU have announced.

Following the BBC's decision to freeze pay, Siemens' IT contractors will ballot to decide whether to take industrial action over the next four weeks.

BECTU national official Suresh Chawla described the pay freeze as a "double whammy" for members, considering the number of redundancies already announced.

More than 70 staff working on the BBC contract have been made redundant.

"It's not even as if a pay freeze is safeguarding jobs. We have no option but to ballot our members for industrial action," said Mr Chawla.

Siemens secured a ten-year contract to supply the BBC with technology services in 2004, with the BBC expecting to save £30 million over that period as a result.

The German firm are also outsourcing 50 jobs in sever operations to Romania.ADNFCR-2994-ID-19640099-ADNFCR
