Self Assessment Deadline Extended

HMRC have extended the deadline for submitting Self Assessment returns by two days.

The official deadline is midnight on Tuesday 31st January but because of strike action planned by The Public and Commercial Services Union at enquiry and call centres the deadline has been effectively extended until the 2nd of February.

The Revenue has said it will not be issuing penalties to anyone who files their tax return on the 1st or 2nd of February and those who have tax to pay will not incur any interest on payments made on those days.

The acting director general for personal tax, Stephen Banyard, said: "We have always been very clear that we want the returns, not the penalties. For that reason, we don't want anyone who can't get through for help and advice on 31 January to be disadvantaged in any way."

It is estimated that 2 million individuals are yet to submit their returns.
