Revenue to Target Tax Avoidance by Large Companies

Speaking at his first PM Direct event in 2012, David Cameron has said that there should be a far harder stance on Large Companies that avoid huge amounts of Tax.

He said that HMRC should be “thinking about being business friendly to small businesses” but, "With the large companies, that have the fancy corporate lawyers and the rest of it, I think we need a tougher approach.”

The Prime Minister said knew how companies "use the complexity of the tax and legal system to try and endlessly reduce their tax payments" because he had worked in “corporate Britain”

"One of the things that we are going to be looking at this year is whether there should be a general anti-avoidance power that HMRC can use, particularly with very wealthy individuals and with the bigger companies, to make sure they pay their fair share."

He added, "Of course it's right for companies to be able to plan and have predictability and the rest of it, but they should be paying a fair tax rate".

Whether general anti-avoidance power will genuinely be used to target big businesses and the extremely wealthy remains to be seen, hopefully it will not be used to chase after the “softer” but ultimately less lucrative targets such as contractors. We will know more come the Budget in April – probably!
