Older IT contractors 'may have a hard time finding work'

Older IT contractors who take a break from work may experience difficulty getting back into employment, the Employers Forum on Age has warned.
Statistics from Recruitment Genius published this week showed that over-50s often struggle to get work after leaving their jobs, with one-quarter being unemployed for more than 12 months.
However, the study also revealed that over-50s, including IT contractors and freelancers, tend to be able to take on part-time work and be more flexible with their working practices.
Rachel Krys, campaign director for the Employers Forum on Age, said the fact that older people are having trouble getting back in the saddle is a problem that employers aren't necessarily thinking about.
"Also, individuals may be making a short-term decision and don't realise how difficult it is to get into the market," she added.
According to a report from the Chartered Management Institute and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, just 14 per cent of managers in the UK consider their organisation well-prepared to deal with an ageing workforce.
