New VAT rules mean changes for contractors

VAT rules are set to change for contractors due to the 20 per cent rate that is due to be introduced in the new year.
The VAT rise means that contractors will be required to adjust invoices and take the new rate into account when completing VAT returns and claiming VAT back from business purchases.
Those working for umbrella companies will not have to adjust invoices as the umbrella company should be responsible for this.
Contracts started before January 4th and completed afterwards should be calculated carefully so that the 17.5 per cent VAT rate is charged for the work before the deadline and 20 per cent after.
The changes which will be effective from January 4th 2011, will see VAT rise from 17.5 per cent to 20 per cent.
This comes after David Cameron spoke of his support for those in the freelance sector on National Freelancers Day, saying contractors make a massive contribution to the country's economy.
