New torrent system 'is totally useless'
US academics claim to have invented a type of file sharing that companies may soon be asking IT contractors to help them install.

The new BioTorrents Project system is much quicker, as well as significantly reducing bandwidth costs by dividing files up into smaller parts, it is claimed.

However, the new system is only really useful if the company involved has a low bandwidth and the file is very large, according to TorrentFreak.com.

IT contractors should be aware that this is not the case in most businesses, where in fact the exact opposite - high bandwidth and mostly small files - is a more accurate representation of their IT capability, claims the firm's director Ernesto van der Sar.

"The BioTorrents Project is interesting but by glancing through the contents it is totally useless. They could have just used central servers instead," he said.

According to isohunt.com, there are a total of 4,856,609 torrents in circulation, comprising a total of over 116 milion individual files.
