New data protection laws to be introduced
IT contractors will have to ensure compliance with new data protection laws within four years, it has been claimed.

According to the legal firm Field Fisher Waterhouse (FFW) the EU is to release new regulation making it mandatory for all firms to report serious security breaches.

The authorities and the individuals involved must be informed under the new legislation, which is an amendment to the 1995 EU Data Protection Directive Silicon.com reports.

"All of the European data protection regulators have made very strong calls for this mandatory breach notification," the head of the privacy and information law group at FFW Eduardo Ustaran told the website.

He went on to explain that the law will be published by November and this must be incorporated into UK law by 2014.

The European Commission recently threatened the UK government with legal proceedings if they do not give regulator the Information Commissioner's Office more power.
