Microsoft's browser selection screen 'unfair on smaller firms'

IT contractors have been urged by a computing website to consider the makers of smaller web browsers when setting internet preferences.
Microsoft's new browser choice screen has been declared "hugely unfair" on the makers of smaller web browsers, by broadband-expert.co.uk.
The services of the smaller firms may be more suitable for a client's needs, but the choice screen does not recognise them, it is claimed.
As a result, Avant Browser, Flock, GreenBrowser, Maxthon, Sleipnir and SlimBrowser have written to the European Commission requesting greater prominence in Microsoft's browser choice screen.
Rob Webber, spokesperson for broadband-expert.co.uk, said it was wrong that the choice screen allowed Microsoft to "dictate" which browsers users could choose from.
The pop-up, which offers users the chance to switch from Internet Explorer to another browser, has been included in Microsoft security updates since March 1st.
"Before these changes were introduced most people stuck with the default browser as they won't be aware of the other options available meaning that Internet Explorer dominates as the default option for so many people," added Mr Webber.
