Mac-specific security threats 'are increasing'

IT contractors who use Apple products to reduce their exposure to security threats have been handed a stark warning.
According to the solutions architect for Trend Micro Rik Ferguson, there has been a steady increase in Mac-specific malware in the last 12 to 18 months.
Whereas before threats focused on Windows-equipped machines, malware sites now provide both, as criminals do not discriminate between operating systems.
"If they see that the popularity of the Mac platform is such that it is worth creating malicious code for that platform then they'll do it," he said.
Mr Ferguson concluded by saying that it is important for all IT contractors to practice safe computing especially if they use socially networking sites from their Mac.
Processor maker Intel has announced it is to buy security firm McAfee for $7.68 billion (£4.9 billion), as the firm looks to address the increasing threat to internet users from cyber crime.
