IT contractors 'will not see jobs growth in 2010'
IT contractors will not see an increase in the number of available job vacancies in 2010, it has been claimed.

According to the staffing agency SThree, IT contractors have been in demand lately, but this is due to the fact they are getting "itchy feet" and moving between jobs - not because of an increase in opportunities.

TechMarketView's Richard Holway said that this indicates that 2010 will be another year of shrinkage rather than growth in the UK IT market.

SThree's IT-based contractor business fell by 22 per cent in the six months between November 2009 and May 2010, as contracts they expected to have extended were left to expire.

In addition, conditions in the public sector continue to be "torrid", with the firm receiving only half the expected number of billings from public bodies.

However, there is hope in the public sector, as the Recruitment & Employment Confederation recently suggested that the government's commitment to adopting flexible working practices could create roles for IT contractors.
