IT contractors warned of new HMRC scrutiny
IT contractors have been warned of new punishments in place designed to reduce the number of people not paying the correct amount of tax.

HM Revenues & Customs (HMRC) is promising to place those who avoid paying taxes under increased scrutiny over the next five years.

The move is part of a new HMRC initiative – Managing Deliberate Defaulters.

HMRC plans come on top of increased fines and naming and shaming of people who have tried to avoid at least £25,000 of tax.

David Gauke, exchequer secretary to the Treasury, said: "Managing Deliberate Defaulters will deter people from evading tax in the future and reassure honest taxpayers that tax evaders will be dealt with."

More than 900 letters have been sent to known evaders warning that their tax accounts will be under increased scrutiny for the next five years.

George Osborne recently pledged £900 million to HMRC to help tackle tax evasion and fraud.
