IT contractors should ensure they recycle end-of-life technology, one expert has said.

Andrew Boddington, marketing director at Ethical IT, said that it is important to focus on recycling in the UK because if wastage is not addressed, it could harm developing countries.

He added that while some people may be wary of recycling technical goods due to data security, this can be addressed through the utilisation of data wiping and granulation.

"Yes, it is a concern and that is a concern we address - [with] one bank we even took the granulating machine on to their site. So yes, data security is an issue, but it's an issue we can very easily address," explained Mr Boddington.

These comments come after the European parliament announced that it is to instigate tighter rules surrounding the disposal of electronic waste while minimising red tape for companies.
