IT contractors 'in greater demand than employees'

There is a greater demand for IT contractors and temporary staff than for employees, according to a report by the UK computer skills council.
Figures from e-skills have revealed that while conditions for the average job seeker worsened in the second quarter of the year, demand for IT contractors grew by ten per cent, compared to four per cent for IT staff.
This was driven by the financial services and electronics industries and put upward pressure on the average advertised rate, the study revealed.
However, it pointed out that real-term growth in IT contractor pay was "less inspiring" and said: "An overall increase in 'real pay' (i.e. actual earnings received) has yet to materialise."
IT contractors with skills in Windows 2000, Prince Exchange, VPN, Windows NT and SMS were in less demand, with the need for their skills falling in the last six quarters.
Those with skills in Sybase, C# and .NET are more likely to be needed.
Research from Capital Economics has warned that the jobs growth seen in the second quarter of 2010 will not be sustained.
