HMRC told to be lenient with small companies

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) needs to be more reasonable with small businesses, such as those run by IT contractors.
This is the view of Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) chief spokesman Stephen Alambritis, who claims that the tax office should show a little leniency with late payments.
HMRC recently announced that any company which fails to meet the October 31st deadline for the return of paper self-assessment tax returns will be hit with a fine of £100.
But Mr Alambritis suggests that this can be a large amount of money for some people, and allowances should be made for those who are self-employed - especially because HMRC has made some well-publicised mistakes in recent months.
"There are also a number of people who are straddling self employment with a PAYE job, so they really are up against it in terms of finding the paperwork and doing their own accounts," he added.
