HMRC guidance 'can help IT contractors with IR35 status'
IT contractors looking for help establishing their tax status can get help from HMRC's employment status resources.

The online documents are the same guidance used by HMRC compliance officers, so they can help IT contractors establish whether they are classed as an employee and subject to IR35 legislation, reports Contractor Calculator.

IT is also possible to use the Employment Status Indicator to get a snapshot of how HMRC would see their status.

"Although no substitute for the services of an independent expert in IR35 and employment law, HMRC's online guidance can provide valuable insights for contractors wishing to ensure they do not fail self-employment tests," the advice website notes.

The guidance also comes with case studies of contract reviews, so IT contractors can see how their employment contracts would be viewed by the taxman.

Contractor Calculator recently advised self-employed workers that they should only seek an HMRC contract review as a last resort.
