Govt must make employment 'its top priority'

Creating job opportunities for IT contractors and other workers must be the top priority for the new government, according to the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC).
The Office for National Statistics today (May 12th) announced that the UK employment rate had fallen to 72 per cent, with unemployment now standing at 2.51 million - the highest figure since 1994.
Britain's flexible jobs market, including IT contractors, has played a key role in ensuring that unemployment has not reached the level seen in other European countries, claims REC chief executive Kevin Green.
Through economic growth, improved regulation and public sector reform the government must create more jobs, Mr Green insists.
He concluded: "There are a number of regulatory measures brought in by the last government which threaten our flexible labour market.
"We call on the new government to reconsider these urgently."
Earlier this year, the REC claimed that the public sector could avoid having to make major redundancies by taking a more strategic approach to flexible working.
