Gender gap 'present in contracting'
A gender gap is present in the contracting industry, new research has claimed.

The Parasol Insight Index found that the average hourly salary for male contractors is £34.41 in comparison with female contractors, who earn an average of £32.91. Over a working year, this pay gap comes to an average total of £2,643.

It was also revealed that contractors working in the finance and oil industry earned the highest average rate with male and female contractors earning £53.74 and £53.66 respectively.

Rob Crossland, Chief Executive at Parasol, said that the usual reasons for a gender pay gap, such as women taking a break to have a family do not stand up in the world of contracting.

"When an end-user employs a contractor it is based on them having the required skill set in order to satisfy the end users requirements. Surely it is the skill set and the market for this skill set that should set the rate, and contractor’s gender should not have an impact?"

Meanwhile, Richard Nott, director of CWJobs.co.uk, has said that the IT industry needs to increase its intake of young people by providing courses relevant to what businesses want.
