Firms need staff monitoring systems 'to protect against fraud'
IT contractors may be required to help firms protect themselves against staff fraud, it is claimed.

UK companies need to develop reliable staff monitoring systems to protect the integrity of their business, according to credit reporting firm Equifax.

While electronic monitoring of staff activity can be an expensive process, it is infinitely preferable to the potential financial and reputational costs that can arise through fraud, says Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax.

He added: "A lot of fraud can be picked up if you find people have financial difficulties elsewhere, and that is the key driver.

"Random checks of people in sensitive conditions would be wise."

According to UK fraud prevention service CIFAS, there has been a 45 per cent increase in staff fraud during 2009, when compared with the previous year.

In addition, there has been a 113 per cent increase in instances of unlawfully obtaining or disclosing personal data.
