Beware of fake HMRC emails

HMRC has issued a warning to taxpayers regarding 'phishing' e-mails sent during the countdown to the self assessment deadline of 31st January.

Each year HMRC sends emails reminding customers to file their Self Assessment returns. These emails never ask you to provide personal or financial information. The latest batch of emails has been sent from 5 December 2012 and includes information relating to the Self Assessment Service.

HMRC never sends notifications of a tax rebate by email, or asks you to disclose personal or payment information by email.

Do not visit the website contained within the email or disclose any personal or payment information.
