Employment rate for contractors rises again
Jobs for IT contractors and other temporary staff reached their highest rate in 34 months this March, according to a new survey.

In a study which drew on data provided by recruitment agencies across the country, KMPG and the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) found that the number of permanent staff appointments rose at the fastest pace in over 12 years last month.

Contractors and temporary staff were in demand at a level not seen since January 2008, the report claims.

This shows that contractors provide "vital flexibility for UK businesses", according to Kevin Green, chief executive of the REC.

However, a note of caution came from Bernard Brown, partner and head of business services at KPMG: "A lot of the current hiring activity is going on in the public sector.

"The public sector recession which clearly is on the cards hasn't hit the jobs market yet but when it does, the upwards trend we have seen over the last couple of months may come to a halt."

The REC launched a campaign back in February, advising the public sector that using contractors and other flexible workers could save costs without having to make cuts. ADNFCR-2994-ID-19708905-ADNFCR
