Demand for IT contractors continues to fall
UK demand for IT contractors continues to fall, according to the latest figures from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC).

The latest REC jobs index indicates that demand for temporary IT contractors fell to 56.4 in May, down from 57.1 in April and 58.5 in March.

Worryingly, this is in stark contrast to the rest of the temporary working sector, which in general saw a strong rise in demand and a small growth in pay rates.

The REC chief executive Kevin Green said that the organisation remains concerned as public sector cuts begin to bite.

Reacting to the news, the head of business services at KPMG Bernard Brown said the figures were not a surprise, considering the government has announced cuts will be made in public sector IT budgets.

"Many public sector employers will have imposed embargoes on recruitment at least until we get more details of further cuts in the emergency budget on June 22nd," he added.
