Declining public sector could lead to 'jobless recovery'
The rapid slowing of the public sector jobs market may leave IT contractors in a "jobless recovery", according to a leading recruitment industry body.

Figures released today by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) would seem to be positive, with the number of unemployed people falling by 33,000 to 2.45 million between November and January.

Jobseeker's Allowance was also claimed by 32,330 fewer people in February, although the number of long-term unemployed rose by 61,000 to 687,000, according to the ONS.

It is the slowing of the public sector jobs market that really concerns the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), however.

This could leave the UK in the midst of a "jobless recovery", where unemployment remains stable despite the country moving out of recession, according to REC chief executive Kevin Green.

The REC recently launched Make it Work, a campaign designed to encourage greater use of contractors and temporary workers in the public sector, rather than just cutting jobs.

Mr Green added that the ONS figures underlined the importance of this campaign.ADNFCR-2994-ID-19674875-ADNFCR
