Data loss 'is a growing concern' for small business
IT contractors may be required to help small firms deal with the problem of data loss, as a new report highlights it as a growing concern.

While viruses and Trojans remain the biggest worry for small businesses, concerns over data loss are now almost as common, according to a survey by Trend Micro.

The poll showed that 59 per cent of smaller firms are worried about data-stealing malware, while 56 per cent also have fears regarding data leaks, be they deliberate or accidental disclosures.

David Perry, Trend Micro's global director of education, warned that it would not be a surprise to see data-stealing malware concerns become the top priority for IT professionals in the next few years.

"What this tells us is that data loss, either through internal data leaks or malware, is a serious issue for small businesses, especially as they become more aware of their attractiveness to cybercriminals," he added.

Information Commissioner Stephen Graham recently announced that the first major fines for companies found to be in breach of the Data Protection Act will be announced later this month.
