Contractors 'must think about pensions now'
Umbrella company contractors should be thinking about their pension now, according to one expert.

Keith Churchouse, director at Churchouse Financial Planning, said that contractors and other professionals need to be aware that their security in old age could depend on being pro-active now.

He blamed apathy and lack of education for the lack of workers interested in saving up.

"I do think it is an education issue. Many people make the assumption that either the state will look after them or that they can start saving when they're 50 and they will then catch up," he said.

Meanwhile, Aviva has found that job-hopping and 'portfolio careers' can mean that people lose track of their pensions, threatening future financial security.

A survey by the company found that 28 per cent of workers predict they will contribute to two plus pension pots during their working life and yet, nearly two-thirds are unaware they can combine these.
