Contractor jobs could rise if government IT plans go ahead
Job opportunities for IT contractors could rocket if new plans to consolidate government websites are realised.

This improvement in government internet services would be designed to provide higher quality and more convenient 24/7 services to users.

Martha Lane Fox, UK digital champion, also suggests transferring 30 per cent of government service delivery contracts to digital channels in a move that would save more than £1.3 billion, or £2.2 billion if 50 per cent of contacts shifted to digital.

She said: "Government should take advantage of the more open, agile and cheaper digital technologies to deliver simpler and more effective digital services to users, particularly to disadvantaged groups who are some of the heaviest users of government services."

The plans would include simplifying the user experience of digital public services by making all governmental transactions available through Directgov, ensuring online information and services are available all over the web and recruiting an executive director for digital and information in the cabinet office.
