Cities 'should be prioritised' for high-speed broadband
When the government finally rolls out superfast broadband, it should focus on supplying urban areas, rather than rural communities, according to a technology website.

Businesses should be the first to benefit from the service, helping them boost employment opportunities for IT contractors, claims V3.co.uk.

Given an unlimited supply of funds, it could be rolled out across the whole country at once, but this is not going to be an option, according to Madeline Bennett, editor at V3.co.uk.

"It is important to also find some funding in the long-term for rural access, but I'd say only if there's a genuine business case for it," she said.

Businesses need to be the priority because of the growth it could generate in the UK economy, which has a knock-on effect for everyone, Ms Bennett added.

Three-quarters of V3.co.uk readers disagreed with the government's attempts to introduce a broadband tax to make up the shortfall in funding for the new high-speed network.

Around half thought that telecoms firms should foot the bill.ADNFCR-2994-ID-19724507-ADNFCR
