Businesses 'must re-think cyber tactics'

IT contractors must help businesses re-evaluate their tactics for dealing with cyber threats, it has been claimed.
When a business finds itself to be the victim of a cyber attack, it should contact its security vendor immediately, but it should not shut its network off from the internet, according to software company Kaspersky Lab.
"Taking down your internet is like a shopkeeper closing the shop sign: if you're closed you're not making money," said the company's senior regional researcher David Emm.
Instead, firms should seek to gather as much information as possible on the threat and give this information to the security vendor so that the appropriate course of action can be decided, Mr Emm said.
According to the latest data from Symantec, there has been an increase in the amount of threats designed specifically to target businesses, while overall there was a 100 per cent increase in the amount of malicious programs on the web between 2008 and 2009.
