Businesses 'are not prepared' for carbon reduction commitment
IT contractors may be needed to help businesses comply with energy reduction and efficiency legislation, it has been claimed.

According to the latest survey by Morse, 65 per cent of UK businesses are not ready to comply with the introduction of the carbon reduction commitment.

In light of this, 72 per cent said that making their IT operations more environmentally friendly was a top priority, although 70 per cent don't know how much power they use.

Reacting to the survey, marketing manager at networking solutions firm D-Link Europe Andrew Holland said that IT infrastructure is incredibly wasteful, with network switches alone often using 50 per cent more energy than they need to.

"Anything that can be done to reduce the energy consumption of the switch has an obvious benefit in terms of cost-saving and reducing power usage," he added.

The introduction of two carbon cutting incentive schemes has already led to reductions of around 34 per cent on 1990 levels, the government announced in early-April.
