Business networks 'may die' during World Cup matches

IT contractors made responsible for company networks during the World Cup could face a complete breakdown of systems if too many employees choose to watch games.
Networks could die at kick off if too many people watch live video streams from their workstation, according to Blue Coat Systems.
The application delivery network firm's vice-president of Europe, the Middle East and Africa Nigel Hawthorn explained that video traffic over the internet increases with news and live events.
He added: "At kick off someone's network is going to die; if no UK business has a problem, I'll eat my replica England shirt."
Mr Hawthorn added that IT contractors working for internet service providers could also suffer problems if residents notice congestion affecting their broadband speed.
His comments follow research by PricewaterhouseCoopers, which indicated that four per cent of people in the east of England expect to watch England matches online, compared to 14 per cent of Londoners, underlining the digital divide in the UK.
