BT strike 'likely to impact on broadband service'

IT contractors have been warned that the possible strike action by BT staff may affect broadband service and system support, it is claimed.
Earlier this week, the Communication Workers Union announced that it would be holding a ballot of 60,000 BT staff over whether to strike in a dispute over pay.
If the strike does go ahead, it will certainly have an impact on the delivery of broadband services, according to Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk.
The scale of that impact depends of course on what percentage of the BT workforce has union ties, but it is likely to be significant, Mr Dawson suggests.
"If it turns into a prolonged strike then it could very well affect the roll out of the fibre-to-the-cabinet next-generation broadband," he warned.
BT plans to invest a further £1 billion - to make a total of £2.5 billion - in order to extend the roll-out of fibre broadband to around two-thirds of UK premises by 2015, it was announced earlier this month.
