Broadband in UK 'needs to aim higher'

IT contractors working from home may be disappointed by the decision to delay the deployment of universal 2Mbps broadband in the UK, but one information site says the government should be more ambitious in its objectives.
The UK now aims to achieve a universal 2Mbps service by 2015 rather than 2012 as a result of insufficient funding, culture secretary Jeremy Hunt announced in July.
According to the International Telecommunication Union, this target is "rather modest" in comparison to some of the UK's neighbours, which have grander plans for their broadband future.
Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, said the target was "pretty lamentable" to begin with, as most internet users such as freelancers already achieve more than double this amount.
"This is, of course, no consolation to the minority of people who are currently suffering with speeds below 2Mbps who may now have to wait much longer than they anticipated for improved speeds," he commented.
