HMRC to fine late filers even when no tax is due

HMRC will be issuing £100 fines to taxpayers who do not complete a tax return by the 31st of January even if there is no tax owed or a rebate is due!

Maugham, a tax partner at UHY Hacker Young, said: "A lot of taxpayers will be wrong-footed by this. Fining someone who doesn't owe tax or is due a rebate seems very heavy-handed"

"Fining taxpayers who are owed money by HMRC seems even more unjust. Ironically, these taxpayers will be doing HMRC a favour by not completing a tax return and asking for a rebate – yet they can now expect to be fined for their generosity."

Approximately 1.4 million returns were filed late last year out of 10 million issues and if that figure remains the same this year, the Revenue will stand to collect a huge sum in fines.
