Formalising flexible working rules 'a step too far'

Formalising the role of IT contractors and other flexible workers is a step too far, it has been claimed.
Speaking at the T-Mobile Roundtable Debate on Small Businesses, the head of policy at the Federation of Small Businesses Andrew Cave said that the state should not interfere with the natural employer-employee relationship.
The legislation would allow employees that right to request flexible working and ensure their employer takes it into consideration.
But Mr Cave claims that most companies already see flexible working as a good thing and already encourage it, with government interference being counter-productive.
"It's difficult to get across, particularly to central government that by introducing [flexible working legislation] you endanger the dynamic that works so well otherwise," he explained.
The T-Mobile Roundtable discussion focused on the changes in working practices and traditions small businesses are making to succeed in 2010 and their priorities in terms of driving growth.
